Ahead of India’s first National Space Day, which also marks the landing anniversary of Chandrayaan-3, ISRO has released a new series of images taken by the Vikram lander and Pragyan rover. These images offer a glimpse into Pragyan’s initial moments on the moon and other significant phases of the mission.
ISRO is set to reveal the thousands of images captured by the Vikram Lander and Pragyan Rover on Chandrayaan-3’s landing anniversary, i.e. tomorrow!! Here’s a sneak peek at some of those images:
According to updates from ISRO Spaceflight, the images were captured using the Lander Imager and Rover Imager. One particularly striking image showcases Pragyan’s attempt to imprint India’s national emblem on the lunar surface, although the attempt faced challenges due to unexpected soil texture.
The NavCam on Pragyan is a black-and-white camera, while the cameras on Vikram are in color. This ongoing exploration is yielding new insights into the moon, shedding light on its history, including the theory that it once had an ocean of magma. The analysis published in the journal Nature is based on measurements taken by the Pragyan rover over a 100-meter stretch of lunar soil.
The rover was deployed by the Vikram lander, which successfully landed near the moon’s south pole on August 23, 2023, as part of the Chandrayaan-3 mission.
